iPhone Mania Week

iPhoneWith less than a week to go until the official release of the iPhone, keyboards all over the world are wearing out those six little letters. The buzz is growing whether we like it or not and I, like you, am beginning to grow apathetic toward the headlines. Don’t get me wrong. I think the product is probably going to be amazing but growing weary is natural reaction to saturation. It’s like difference between when I first saw the Geico “Cavemen” commercials and how I feel about them now that I’ve seen a thousand. In case you aren’t burned out yet, here’s a quick summary of the latest:

Personally, I still go back and forth about owning one. On one hand it seems like a no brainer as it replaces the two primary functions of my laptop, checking email and surfing the net as well as representing a significant advance to the iPod, adding a touch screen, larger viewing dimensions and WiFi. As far as the phone, I dig the visual voicemail but I’m not a texter and I don’t see a situation that calls for using Word or Excel on such small screen. Some complain about the cost but $600 is a steal for all that functionality on one device.

My reservations lie with the fact nearly everyone I know uses Verizon which allows me to have a very cheap plan. The prospect of possibly tripling the cost of my plan — when data packages are factored in — is not very attractive and I’ve managed to get by until now. Then again, there was a time when I got by without an iPod, too. Not anymore.

In the end, I’ll probably hold off simply out of being cheap and apprehensive in every area of my life but I can certainly understand the hoopla, especially for those of us who are dedicated Mac users.
